Organ of State

Definition

Cross-government

An institution listed separately from ministries and statutory boards in the Singapore Government Directory, such as Parliament, the Judiciary, the Attorney-General’s Chambers or the Auditor-General’s Office.

Example: AGO is an organ of state, not a statutory board with an unusually serious name.

Also known as: organs of state

Context: The label does not by itself describe an institution’s legal powers or employment arrangements; those depend on the Constitution and relevant legislation.
