Holding reply

Definition

Cross-government

An interim response sent to a specific enquirer while more information, clearance or a fuller answer is being prepared.

Example: A holding reply buys time politely; “we are checking” is better than disappearing.

Also known as: holding response, interim reply

Context: A holding reply acknowledges the query without implying that the matter has been resolved; a fuller response normally follows.
