Cost avoidance

Definition

Finance and Economy

The prevention or reduction of a new future cost that would otherwise have been incurred.

Example: Negotiating away the supplier's proposed price increase created cost avoidance, not a reduction in current expenditure.

Also known as: avoided cost, avoided costs

Context: Cost avoidance is not automatically cost savings because the avoided amount may not have appeared in prior spending or an approved budget.
