PES status / Refreshed MCS

Different meanings

The refreshed MCS is more granular than a single PES status; it is not merely a renamed PES grade. SAF pre-enlistees enlisting from October 2027 and Home Team pre-enlistees enlisting from November 2027 will be graded under the refreshed MCS, with screening for those cohorts starting from end-June 2026.

PES status

Use when

You mean the existing single A-to-F Physical Employment Standard status that broadly summarises medical fitness and eligibility for training and vocations.

Example

“Under the current system, a pre-enlistee may receive a PES B1 status.”

Refreshed MCS

Use when

You mean the refreshed Medical Classification System, which separately communicates fitness for service, medical exemptions and eligibility for the eight-week full-time NS reduction.

Example

“Pre-enlistees in the affected cohort will receive their results under the refreshed MCS.”

Quick check

treating MCS as a new name for the same PES A-to-F grade, assuming all servicemen immediately move from PES to MCS, omitting the affected cohort boundaries when timing matters
