Mention normally takes a direct object: mention the issue, not mention about the issue. Talk or speak can take about.

You briefly refer to a person, issue, fact or topic; mention normally takes that subject directly as its object.

Example

“The paper mentions the cost increase in paragraph 8.”

Mention about

Use when

Avoid this construction when mention directly takes the subject being referred to.

Example

“Replace 'the paper mentions about the delay' with 'the paper mentions the delay'.”
